Anambra State Police Command has rescued nine girls from sex traffickers in a hotel in Awka, Anambra State capital.

The girls aged between 15 and 23 years.

The police working in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare stormed the hotel around 11:42 p.m on Monday 19th June.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu said the proprietor (name withheld) of the hotel has been arrested, and the police are working with the Ministry to ensure that the girls are safely returned to their parents or guardians.

The PPRO said during interrogation the rescued girls revealed that they were lured to the brothel by individuals who promised them jobs to alleviate their poverty and support their families.

“The girls were taken from Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States. This is a despicable act, and the police have condemned it in the strongest terms possible.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department Awka SCID, for comprehensive investigation, and shall be charged to court afterwards”, DSP Tochukwu said.

The police command has called on the people of Anambra to provide them with information about such places where vulnerable individuals are taken advantage of for criminal activities.

The joint operation to weed out such places has commenced, and the police command has assured the public that all information passed through the channels provided shall be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
