Jos – The Management of the University of Jos is investigating the alleged manhandling of a student of the institution by someone identified as security personnel in the institution.

A video had gone viral showing the student being manhandled and netizens have condemned the act.

Reacting to the incident, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications of the University, Abdullahi Abdullahi in a statement issued in Jos on Wednesday, said investigations have commenced.

According to him, “The attention of Management of the University of Jos has been drawn to a viral video being circulated on the Social Media showing a student of the University allegedly being manhandled by someone who was later identified as a Security Personnel of the University. The University Authorities have since identified the person that was allegedly manhandled as Ponsel Zinglyat Dashe, a 200 Level Mass Communication Student of the University.

“In light of the unfortunate incident, Management wishes to express its deep concern over the matter since it considers students as the primary reason for the University’s existence. To this end, Management has met to deliberate over the matter to find out what truly transpired to resolve it and prevent any future occurrence. Consequent to its deliberation, Management took the following decisions:

“A machinery has been put in place to fully investigate the matter and make recommendations on the appropriate course of action after hearing from all parties involved in the matter. The Committee will have an official of the Students Union Government (SUG) as a member. The Committee is also mandated to interface with the Parents of the Student to assure them that the University is according the matter all the seriousness it deserves.

“That the University will reimburse any Medical Bills duly incurred by the Student as a result of the incident.
The management wishes to assure all students of the University, Parents, and Guardians as well as members of the public that the University of Jos remains a safe environment for all members of the University community especially Students and all who legitimately transact business with the University. They should therefore discountenance any negative perception of the University caused by the aforementioned video as it is not a true reflection of what the University stands for.”

He added, “Management of the University wishes to advise all students and members of the public to remain calm as the matter is being handled expeditiously and with all seriousness.”
