Mr. Uduak Frank Akpan, the murderer of the young Akwa Ibom job seeker, Late Ms. Iniubong Umoren, attempted to escape from the court room after being sentenced to death by hanging.

He was overpowered by gallant officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and forced into a waiting van.

The convict, Akpan insisted that he was not guilty when the presiding judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang, asked him what he had to say after giving the judgment.

“My Lord, in our country, there’re many assassinations, but nobody is doing something about it,” the convict said.

Justice Nkanang said the prosecutor had proved the case beyond doubt and convicted the Mr Akpan for rape and murder.

A brother to the late Iniubong Umoren said the family is happy that justice is served in the case.

“I didn’t believe that common people like us can still have Justice. We lost hope and thought that maybe ‘mago-mago’ would be brought into the case. All of us are happy because he can’t just kill my sister, try to cover it up and go scot free. I am happy that my sister has gotten Justice and she will have peace wherever she is”, he said.
