A high – ranking officer in the Nigeria Police Force, Francis Adie Bissong, is said to have died of the novel Coronavirus.

There is no official statement yet confirming his death.

The Dune learnt that Bissong, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of Criminal Investigation Department in Edo state police command tested positive with Coronavirus.

He died on Tuesday 21st April 2020, according to our security sources.

When his death is confirmed, Bissong will be the first police officer in Nigeria to have died of the deadly Coronavirus disease.

Bissong is said to have possibly contracted the virus recently in Ogun state where he went to pick up his child from school. Ogun state is one of the hotbeds of Coronavirus disease in Nigeria.

When contacted for comment, the public relations officer, zone 5, DSP Emeka Iheanacho, said there is no official statement yet on Bissong’s death.

“I am not making any statement. The AIG has not made any statement in that regard. He is a very senior officer, so it is the AIG that will tell us whether that story is true or not, after the IGP must have given him the order. At my level I don’t have that mandate or competence to speak for now until when IG makes it official”, Iheanacho said.
