Jos – The joy of staff and over 300 students of Government Secondary School, GSS, Gwakim (Dorowa Tsoho) in Fan district, Barkin Ladi local government area, Plateau State knew no bound as dilapidated structures in the school were refurbished and desks provided to the delight of the people.
Apart from the renovation, desks were also provided to end the era of the students sitting on broken furniture and stone.
The delighted staff and students who came out in their numbers to receive the learning tool expressed appreciation for the gesture which came courtesy the Senator representing Plateau North in the National Assembly in conjunction with the Parents/Teachers’ Association, PTA of the school.
The Principal of the School, Mr. Samuel Wash who spoke with our medium commended the efforts of all stakeholders for providing befitting learning spaces and tools saying such would encourage the students to give their best at school.

Wash who disclosed he has spent two years in the school as the Principal noted, “We have had this problem of lack of classrooms, the available ones were not good at all but we were just managing. The PTA started the process of rehabilitation but we were having some financial constraints.
“The community started the project, we did not have the funds to complete it, another son of the soil, Francis Bot came to our rescue at that time and roof a building. We again contacted Senator Istifanus Gyang and requested his assistance as the son of the soil to come to our aid. He obliged us and the result is what we are seeing today.
“SUBEB only renovated a block of two classrooms, structures in the school are put in place through self-help from the PTA. We have over 300 students, we had serious issues with learning space and desks, it is better now but we still need more intervention to make the place comfortable for staff and students.”
However, an aide to Senator Gyang, Musa Ashoms added the Senator had to respond to reposition the school because the school started as a Primary School before it was upgraded to a Secondary School and Senator attended the Primary School in his early years.
In a way, you can say that he is giving back to his alma mater and is also assisting members of his constituency to access quality education.
A student, Caroline Pwajok said, “We are very happy to have these desks, it has not been funny sitting on broken seats, they tear our uniforms and sometimes the nails will scratch and injure us but with these new seats, we are happy that we will not be having torn uniforms again.
“Another thing is that by next rainy season, the roofs of our classes will not be leaking again and we will have comfortable classes to sit in.”
