Five persons suspected to be pirates have been reportedly killed by local vigilante groups in Burutu local government area of Delta state.
The pirates were reportedly killed during a gun battle with the vigilante in the area.
It was gathered that the pirates met their waterloo last weekend after they successfully raided a transport boat and carted away passengers’ belongings.
Sources said that, “one of the victims alerted the vigilante leader who was on patrol.”
“The squad responded to the distress call immediately after the pirates left. They followed at the direction of the thieves and after a short time, gun exchange happened for sometime.
“The vigilante returned with corpses of the pirates to the Burutu town police station to report the incident to the police.”
Meanwhile, there was jubilation in some communities around Burutu which have been frequently attacked by pirates.
The Delta state police public relations officer, Onome Onowakpoyeya confirmed the report.
“Yes it is true, they are five unidentified pirates.”
“One of them escaped, four others were seriously injured but later died at the hospital.”
