Tension has gripped residents of Ozoro, the headquarters of Isoko North local government area of Delta state, as Police shot dead a youth who was among members of the community protesting against police extortion and brutality in the area.

The deceased simply identified as Collins was alleged to have been shot by a yet-to-be identified policeman attached to Ozoro Police Division in Isoko North Local Government Council, during the protest which started about 9am Monday morning, August 3, 2020.

It was gathered that more than 100 protesters took to streets of Ozoro with placards which bears various inscriptions such as “Police stop extorting money from us”, “Police leave us alone”.

They marched from Owhelogbo junction down to Ozoro monarch palace before dispersing at NDC road were the deceased was shot dead by a policeman.

The deceased was however confirmed dead at a nearby hospital where he was rushed to.

Source in the community said, the killing has sparked riot in Ozoro and business activities in the Polytechnic community have been halted.

The protesters demanded that the irate police officer responsible for the killing of the youth be released to them.

More security operatives have been deployed to the community to quell the rising tension.

The protesters had accused the police of brutality and illegal arrest as well as extortion.

When contacted to conform the story, the State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya said the police are still investigating who shot the gun that led to the dead of one of the protesters.
