Pirates have hijacked a boat loaded with passengers around Namasibi axis of the New Calabar River, Degema local government area of Rivers state.
It was gathered that the boat was travelling from Port Harcourt to Ke Clan in Degema when it was hijacked at about 4pm on Wednesday.
The Dune learnt that the armed bandits ordered the passengers to jump into the river.

First responders at the point of the incident said a boat sailor and a few passengers escaped during the hijack.
Residents along the waterway said the whereabouts of passengers of the boat is unknown.
“The sailor escaped from the boat and some others. A nursing mother and some others who could not swim have been taken.”
The sailor of the hijacked boat who was later contacted by our correspondent gave his name as Tamunoiminabo Aginah.
Aginah narrated how the boat was hijacked, “in the morning when we were driving to Port Harcourt, the pirates chased us, but they couldn’t get to us.”

“On our way back to Ke from Port Harcourt as we approached Namasibi, New Calabar River, the pirates appeared in full speed and a superior engine boat and we couldn’t escape them.”
When contacted the spokesman of Rivers State Police Command Nnamdi Omoni said the command is yet to confirm the attack but promise to reach out to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area.
