A group called Nigeria League of Women Voters, Nasarawa State Chapter, on Thursday called for more inclusion of women in leadership positions to contribute their quotas for the development of the country.

Mrs Veronica Ogbole, Nasarawa State Chairperson of the group, made the call in Lafia during an enlightenment walk to commemorate 2021 the International Women’s Day.

Mrs Ogbole said that the call became necessary considering the current inadequate numbers of women in position of authority in the country.

According to her, the group decided to join the rest of the world to embark on the enlightenment walk to celebrate the achievements and challenges faced by women as well as bringing out issues affecting them.

Ogbole, while commending Governor Abdullahi Sule for his gender friendly disposition and appointment of some women in key positions, saying they need more women to be included in leadership positions in the state.

The Chairperson called on relevant stakeholders to support women who have indicated interest to vie for leadership position to ensure that the desire of women were realised.

“We know that International Women’s Day is always on March 8, but today we choose to mark the day by this enlightenment walk to celebrate women.

“We need more women in the position of authority, we need women members in the State Assembly to discuss issues that affecting them, currently we have never had any woman chairman in the state.

Hajiya Silifat Sule, the wife of Governor, while addressing the group at the Government House, charged them to do away with tribal, religion and political sentiments in their quest to change the narrative of women in the state.

Mrs Sule, while commending the unity displayed by the group especially in advancing the course of women, advised them to bring up their children in a godly way so as to be useful to themselves and the society.

Mrs Halima Jabiru, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, commended the group for unity exhibited irrespective of their religions and political affiliation, while calling on them to contest for various positions in the forthcoming local government election.

The Dune reports that the League of Women Voters was established two years ago by concerned women in Nigeria with the objective of mobilisation, sensitisation and promotion of women empowerment in Nigeria.
