Seven new permanent secretaries have been appointed by the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service and sworn into office by Governor Udom Emmanuel.
The Governor also inaugurated chairmen and members of some Boards and commissions at a brief ceremony on at the banquet hall, Government House, Uyo on Monday 30th January.
Sworn-in as Permanent Secretaries are the State Accountant General, Pastor Uwem Andrew-Essien, Barr. Mfon Edemekong, Dr Stephen Effiong, Mrs.
Atim Okoko, Barr. Iquo Abia Esq., Mr. Isaiah Ntekim and Mr Emaeyak Nyong, who is appointed the Auditor General for local government.
Among the Boards reconstituted are, the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS), Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Wastes Management Agency, (AKSEPWMA) and the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Service Commission.

Mr Okon Okon, whose first term as Executive Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service brought about significant, steady and unprecedented growth in the State’s internally generated revenue has been reappointed alongside Prince Akpan Ikim, Chairman of AKSEPWMA whose agency’s efforts in wastes management won for Akwa Ibom the award of the cleanest State in Nigeria.

Governor Emmanuel said managerial and human relations skills were key consideration in the appointment of the new permanent secretaries.
The Governor as quoted by the Government House press unit said, ‘This is one thing I promised Akwa Ibom people that appointment of Permanent Secretaries shall be totally on merit and not by mercy, let those that can do the work be given the opportunity. Permanent Secretary is not a promotion, it is an appointment on merit.’
‘You know when you are graduating, it is usually based on character and learning, it is not just because you have a PhD. We must also watch your character and your relationship with your subordinates, how are you able to manage people, if we hear of complaints it means you can’t manage people and you don’t possess the qualities of a leader, so we look at a lot of things’.
He told them to raise the bar on productivity and relationship with their subordinates in the service.
Addressing the chairmen of Boards and Commissions, Governor Emmanuel described them as pillars in government and tasked them to create impacts that will distinguish them.
