It was a beautiful day filled with thrills, glitz and glamour, as students from different tertiary institutions in Nigeria converged at the Oro Civic Centre, Oron Local Government Area, for the inauguration of a new Executive of the Oro Students’ Union Worldwide.
The Oro Students’ Union Worldwide is the apex students body in Oro Nation, made up of students from Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, School of Nursing, etc.
The colourful ceremony held over the weekend, with secondary school students in attendance, also featured the inauguration of the legislative arm of the Union.
In his inaugural address, the new President, Senator Anthony Eyoh, thanked Oro students for finding him worthy to serve, describing his tenure as an era of reconsolidation and new ideas.
Eyoh, a 400 Level student of Urban and Regional Plannings, University of Cross River State, promised to put together mentorship, empowerment and scholarship programmes for the students, adding he will also ensure what he called collaborative governance.
“My two years sojourn as the Senate President of the Union gave me ample opportunity to appraise and fully understand the dynamics and workings of the system. Therefore, I consider my election as a call to duty; a call I am prepared for and willing to undertake. Leadership is all about shared vision and responsibility. I want to assure you that during my tenure.”
“This administration will work towards ensuring capacity building, amplifying students voice and membership base expansion. I am persuaded that with the support, collaboration and partnership of esteemed Oro patriots, spirited individuals and organizations, we will be able to build bridge and create an indisputable impact in our society”, he said.
Chairman on the Occasion and Chairman of Oron Local Government Council, Hon. Victor Anwanakak, represented by Rev. Ime Okon called on the students to be studious and described education as a tool against illiteracy and marginalization.
He congratulated the new leaders and tasked them to work for the collective interest of Oro students.
Similarly, the President-General of Oro Union, Bishop Etim Ante, represented by Comrade Evans Esifa, urged the new Executive to work out modalities to expand the students wing of the Oro Union in order to give Oro students a sense of belonging
High points of the event was a keynote presentation by Dr. Sunday Udokwo, a foremost Laboratory Scientist from Oro Nation and presentation of Certificates of Return to the newly sworn-in Executive Members and Parliamentarians.
The newly inaugurated Executive has Anthony Eyoh as President, President, Ofonime Ekpenyong, Vice President, Divine Jacob, Secretary General, Kingsley Duncan, Assistant Secretary and Larry Kingsley, Treasurer.
Others include Daniel Bassey, Financial Secretary, Michael Bassey, Director Of Information, Victoria Antai, Director Of Socials, Bright Ante, Director Of Academic Research and Strategy as well as Rebecca Ekeng, Director Of Women Affairs.
