Flood has swept away houses in some communities in Effurun, Uvwie and Warri South local government areas of Delta State.

More than 100 residents have lost their homes and were left stranded in the heavy rainstorm which destroyed roofs of many houses.

The heavy rain which started around 8am on Thursday June 11, 2020, crumbled business activities as some of the residents were seen struggling to move out their goods from debris of shops and rescuing their properties from the flood.

Recall that we had earlier reported how rainstorm destroyed worship centres, schools and homes in Plateau state.

Some residents whose houses were submerged by flood in Effurun, and Warri attributed the flooding to blocked drainages and water channels in the oil city of Warri.

They decried that drainages were blocked by wastes.

Matthew Ezo, a tricycle rider residing in Jakpa road Effurun in Uvwie local government area said, “my whole house has been flooded with water because no way for the water to flow down to the canal down the other street. I lost all my foods stuff to the flood. My garri and other food items are wet even my bed.”

Mrs Grace Okpoko, a residence of Polokor in Warri South Local government area while counting her lost said; “you can see that from the beginning of the street down to the end, there are no drains or water channels. So how can the water flow? If we have drains and water channels in our streets and all the drains on our roads are properly kept clean this flood would have been averted.”

One of the flood victims in Effurun/Sapele road who has been rendered homeless by the flood, Mrs Ngozi Emeka fought hard to hold back her tears as she disclosed that her children slept in different places while she always lay her head anywhere she found herself until some of her neighbours assisted her to secure an apartment where she kept her belongings.

Destiny Akpobasan, a father of two girls and a boy added that he had no hope anywhere having lost his home and belongings to the disaster.

“I need help. I don’t know what to do now. I will be grateful if anyone can help me to survive this situation,” he stated.

They however called on the State Government and the state ministry of environment to come to their aid by constructing drains and ensure that all drains are channeled to the various water canals and river in the reach Oil city of Warri and its environs.
