The Senate of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has appointed Prof. Fidelis Owamah, as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic).

A Professor of Civil Engineering and the current Director of Academic Planning, Owamah achieved the rank of professor in October 2022 at the age of 40.

His appointment was confirmed during a special Senate meeting held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. According to a statement from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, Owamah will assume office on March 11, 2025, following the completion of the tenure of the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Ochuko Anomohanran.

His appointment is subject to ratification by the university’s governing council.

In his acceptance speech, Owamah expressed gratitude to God and the university’s Senate for their confidence in him.

He stated, “I sincerely appreciate the Vice-Chancellor for considering me worthy of this prestigious position. I am also deeply thankful for the unwavering support and goodwill I have received since joining the university.”

Academic and Professional Background

Born on August 27, 1982, Owamah attended Umejei Primary School (1987–1993) and St. Thomas’ College (1993–1999) in Ibusa, Delta State. He earned a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, in 2006, followed by an M.Eng. from the University of Port Harcourt in 2011.

He later obtained a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Benin in 2016.

Owamah began his academic career at Landmark University, Omu-Aran, before joining DELSU as a Senior Lecturer in 2016. He rose swiftly through the ranks, becoming a professor in 2022 at the age of 40.

Over the years, he has held several key administrative positions, including:
• Head, Department of Civil Engineering (2017–2020)
• Deputy Director, Intensive and Part-Time Programmes (2020–2022)
• Director, Academic Planning (2022–present)

As Director of Academic Planning, Owamah played a pivotal role in securing full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for all 92 academic programs at DELSU—an achievement unprecedented in the university’s history.

He also oversaw the establishment of 15 new programs within the institution.

A Respected Scholar and Administrator
Recognized for his dynamism and administrative expertise, Owamah commands the respect of his colleagues as a young and vibrant professor with outstanding leadership skills.

He is a prolific researcher with over 60 scientific articles published in top-ranking Scopus-indexed journals and has participated in numerous national and international conferences as a sought-after speaker.

Owamah is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers.

He has also been a registered professional engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria for over a decade.

Happily married with children, Prof. Owamah continues to contribute significantly to academia and professional practice in Nigeria.
