The Akwa Ibom State Government has donated 30 brand new Hilux vans to security agencies to help tackle recent surge in criminality in the State.
The State has witnessed increase in cases of armed robbery, car snatching, cult clashes since October.
In November, cult groups clashed in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area leading to the death of about seven young boys who were alleged to be members of the rivalry cult groups.

On Wednesday 9th December, armed men robbed business outlets around Ibom plaza located in the city centre of the State capital. The armed men fired gunshots sporadically forcing the large converge of people around the plaza to run away.
In a brief after Thursday’s State Executive Council meeting, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Ini Ememobong, said the State Government has donated 30 operational vehicles to security agencies in the State.

Ememobong said the vans are part of the 100 operational vehicles the State Government plans to donate to security agencies.
“The Governor presided over the security council meeting attended by all service commanders in the state, where the current security situation in the state was analyzed and the decision to reactivate a Joint Task Force was reached. Thirty (30) new utility vehicles were distributed to the different services for use in combating crime. These vehicles are the first batch of the 100 vehicles targeted to be delivered to the security agencies for mobility.”
“The Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme speaking on behalf of the service commanders assured the citizens of maximum protection during the yuletide and beyond. He urged citizens to call the police emergency numbers or the info hot line when there is an incident, instead of resorting to social media”, the Commissioner said.
