Akwa Ibom state has recorded two new cases of Coronavirus, bringing the number of people who have tested positive to the virus in the state to 11.

National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in her latest update on COVID-19 released on Thursday 23rd April, said 108 new cases have been reported.

The cases recorded are, 78 in Lagos, 14 in FCT, five in Ogun, four in Gombe, three in Borno, two in Akwa Ibom, one each in Kwara and Plateau states.

The new cases bring the total number of Coronavirus cases recorded in Nigeria to 981, with Akwa Ibom recording 11 cases.

The Akwa Ibom state government has not reacted to the report of the new cases yet.

The report came at a time the Akwa Ibom state government was enjoying favourable media reports having been commended by the NCDC for scoring 99 percent in contact-tracing and other critical elements in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

In a release entitled “Epi Summary of Covid-19 outbreak in Akwa Ibom State, dated April 21, 2020, NCDC said Akwa Ibom has done a lot in stemming the rate of the infection through contact tracing.

NCDC scored the state government 99 percent in percentage of contacts traced. It also scored the state 2.7 percent on the “Proportions of Contacts that have developed (suggestive) symptoms which is a great success ratio.

“This is a great news and a huge testament to the proactive stance of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel who has been front and centre in the fight to contain this deadly pandemic,” Emmanuel Ekuwem, chairman of the COVID-19 management committee and the secretary to the state government, had said.

Akwa Ibom state is building an additional 300 bed capacity isolation center at Methodist General hospital, Ituk Mbang, Uruan local government area to complement two other centers operational in the state.
