The Surveyors Council of Nigeria has vowed to ensure that all quacks who have given a bad name to the profession in Nasarawa state are sanctioned.
Registrar of the council, Surv. Mohammed Kabir, made the disclosure on Monday in Lafia at the inauguration of Nasarawa State Chapter of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors.
He said that any registered surveyor found encouraging members who are yet to register with the union will be sanctioned in line with the existing law.
According to him, ” Even if a person is a PhD holder but has not registered and receives licensed by the council to practice, the person is a quack.
“Anybody interested in the profession should follow due process of registration instead of operating illegally.
“Even if an interested person only has Senior Secondary Schools Certificate, the council has various professional examinations that once the person passes, he is qualified to practice,” the Registrar added.

Kabir also used the opportunity to appeal with the Nasarawa State Government to enact a law to establish the office of the Surveyor-General of the state with the necessary powers and independence.
He explained that the federal government had created the office of the Surveyor-General since 2005 therefore, all states of the federation should also establish it in line with global best practices and the law.
He also inaugurated a zonal office of the council in Lafia, saying that, the office would be in charge of Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau States respectively.
Also speaking at the event, Dr David Oluwamotemi, National President, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, expressed worry over the activities of quacks in the profession while calling on the Nasarawa state government to emulate the federal government by establishing the office of the Surveyor-General.
In his inaugural address, Mr Nathaniel Ibrahim, Nasarawa State Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, promised to ensure that members operate in line with the law with compromising standard.
In his goodwill message, David Maiyaki, Chairman House Committee on Lands and Urban Development at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly who was also the chairman of the occasion, promised to sponsor a bill for the creation of the office of the Surveyor-General in the state.
