The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Okon Okon has been honoured by the Alumni of Nigeria’s flagship newspaper, The Guardian for his immense contributions to “The Nigerian Media Flagship Project”.

The event, which took place in Lagos State recently and attracted former and current employees of the Newspaper, top public figures, business leaders and government officials featured the presentation of a 590 page book titled “The Making Of The Nigerian Flagship: A story of The Guardian” written by Messrs Aaron Ukodie and O’Seun Ogunseitan chronicles the conception, planning, birth and nurturing of The Guardian Newspaper arguably Nigeria’s most internationally renowned Newspaper in 40 years.

The book also recognized the labours and contributions of Journalists who made significant impact in The Guardian Newspaper Group in the first 10 years of it’s existence and hopes to bridge the generational gap amongst professional practitioners in the industry.

Mr. Okon Okon who served during his National Youth Service (1988-1989) as a finance reporter with The Guardian Newspapers, created significant impact in the The Guardian group of Newspapers especially in the Guardian Financial. In recognition of his talent, sterling contributions and huge performance potentials he was offered a full time employment ahead of the completion of his national service.

He excelled during his stay with the Establishment and was honoured for his sterling discharge of his duties during his stay.

Speaking with reporters in Uyo, Mr. Okon Okon expressed gratitude to God for the Award, emphasizing that the honour is yet another inspiration for more hard work in all his assignments.

He commended The Guardian Newspaper family for the love and unity over the decades and described the honour as relieving the memories of his service to the society.

“This honour is cherished. I thank God for this milestone. I never knew my contributions were being observed and preserved. As a journalist, I worked with high level of professionalism and I am excited that today, with the benefit of hindsight there is every reason to be happy and celebrate this honour. It provides a powerful tonic for more hard work especially in my present public assignment in Akwa Ibom State”, Mr. Okon Okon said.

The forward of the Book is written by veteran Journalist and former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Segun Osoba.

The Guardian Newspaper is 40 years old.
