JOS- Increasing criminality and other forms of insecurity currently threatening the peaceful co-existence of Nigeria can be curbed if professionals like journalists can use their profession to proffer solutions to the diverse challenges.
Executive Secretary, Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC, Rev. Yakubu Pam said this on Sunday in Jos while speaking at the Church of Christ in Nations, COCIN, during a Thanksgiving service.
Pam who spoke on the topic, “the role of the media in peace building: The Biblical perspective”, at the service attended by members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Plateau State Council noted journalism is a call hence the need for journalists to practice their profession with the aim of fostering peace in society.

He appealed to professional journalists to check and counter fake news by nonprofessional so that such do not aggravate situations, which have the tendency to set the society on fire.
The cleric called on journalists to promote peace through objective reporting on issues that can engender harmony all over the country.
Rev. Pam who took his text from the Bible books of Isaiah 52:7 and Psalm 68:11 urged journalists to use their work and set the pace for peace.
Also, Rev. Williams John tasked journalists to use their profession to fight social ills saying, “Journalism is very powerful and has the impetus to change the world use your weapon and fight for the peace, unity and common good of all Nigerians.

“As the voice of the voiceless, I challenge you to cry out on our behalf to the world against the plagues of insurgency, criminality, armed banditry, kidnapping, poverty, nepotism, Fulani herders, Boko haram, hike in prices of commodity beyond the reach of the common man and lots more that are ravaging us in this country. Don’t be silence at a time like this.”
The State Governor, Simon Lalong, represented by Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Slyvanus Tagun, acknowledged that journalists in the State despite losing some on their colleagues in the course of duty and some having impairment, they have continued to work to promote the government hence the need to be supported.
Earlier, Chairman of the Chapel, Gyang Bere, said the thanksgiving was to appreciate God for His grace on the lives of his members despite the challenges they face in the course of their work.
The Deputy General Secretary of COCIN, Rev. Dauda Jimra dedicated the Chapel’s newly purchased vehicle.
